Cutting 3 mm plywood with a laser — fast, clean, no traditional tools
Thin plywood under a 10 W diode CNC laser: a quick process with a few details that need watching.
When you don’t want to break out the saw or the router — and you need a dozen plywood parts in a repeatable shape — a laser can knock it out in a fraction of the time.

3 mm plywood is no challenge for a 10 W diode CNC laser — the edge comes out clean, geometry is repeatable to a tenth of a millimetre, and the lack of mechanical stress (compared to sawing) avoids tear-out on fine teeth and tips.
It’s the ideal technology for:
- enclosure prototypes,
- jigs and templates,
- model components,
- decorative wood parts.
What we watch out for
When laser-cutting wood, operator attention matters:
- wood has uneven density — knots and grain change burn rate locally,
- there’s a real ignition risk, especially with multiple passes along the same path,
- smoke and dust must be extracted.
So the process runs under constant supervision, with a fire extinguisher in arm’s reach and proper ventilation. In return you get a result you simply can’t achieve with a saw.
